This is a rare set of Cartier gold presentation cufflinks made for the Serbian-Yugoslavian Royal family in 1944. They were specifically commissioned for the last Serbian king, King Peter II for the occasion of his wedding to Alexandra, the Princess of Greece, that took place in London in 1944 towards the end of the Second World War. Only a very limited number of highest ranking officials and Royalties attended he wedding ceremony in London and just a few received such a Cartier Royal wedding presentation cufflink set.

The attendees included King George VI (as best man) and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of Netherlands Wilhelmina and the Dutch Prince Bernhard, King Haakon VII of Norway, the Greek King George II with Princess Aspasia, Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia as well as the Duke and Dutchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

Made, unusually for Cartier, out of solid 9 carat gold, the cufflinks have an oval shape with size 19mm x 14mm and chain links between each cuff. On each cufflink, there is a beautiful engraving of the Royal ciphers / monograms of King Peter II and Alexandra of Greece with a crown on top. The cufflinks are marked with Cartier London marks, the Cartier serial number, as well as the relevant 9 carat hallmarks at bottom. The set has a net weight of 11.3 grams.

The cufflinks come in a genuine antique Cartier leather presentation case in superb condition with embossed gold decoration at top of the red leather lid and bottom is marked in gold Cartier Ltd. The inside of the lid also has a gold embossed text of Cartier.

This set would have been considered extremely valuable during 1944 and the last days of the War since during this wartime period most precious and non-precious metals were scarce, having been diverted to support military production.

Cufflinks like this are rare to find and eminently collectible. We have a pre-eminent collection of antique and vintage cufflinks with over 20 pairs available. These would make a stunning and unique gift for any gentleman. Perhaps for a wedding or birthday or just because!

ABOUT OUR JEWELLERY

This piece has been specifically selected by us, for you. We choose vintage and antique items which we think are beautiful, elegant and classic at a range of price points between £30 and £3,000. Generally, this means we only ever have one of each piece. We don’t select pieces which are “mass market” but rather items which are more individual. This means that once an item has been purchased, it really has gone. Each piece comes in an attractive jewellery presentation box.
